Stones are small, hard deposits that form in the kidneys or gallbladder. They develop when there is a decrease in urine or an increase in certain substances, such as minerals and salts. Changes in diet can help prevent them. Stones can cause extreme pain and occur in around 9% of women and 19% of men in the United States, according to the National Kidney Foundation.
